I finally got to paint a field of sunflowers last summer and it was a glorious day. Our group of plein air painters were worried about Covid, so we painted in a long, staggered line.
"Stargazers" by Ann McCann 7 X 11" Watercolors
I worked on watercolors of Stargazer lilies this weekend. They are one of my favorite flowers though their scent can become overpowering, and the cinnamon colored stamens make a mess. What we sacrifice for beauty!
"Cottage by the Sea" by Ann McCann 9 X 12" Oil
Here is another view from our Wellfleet cottage window of the wildflower field and the harbor beyond.
"Gold on the Harbor" by Ann McCann 9 X 12" Oil
I’m back home from Wellfleet MA and missing this scene from my bedroom window. I would look out over a wildflower field with gold finches and the ocean in the background. It was lovely. This is goldenrod with some tiny lilac flowers.
"Pines in the Morning" by Ann McCann 8 X 10" Oil
This is the view I see every morning from my Connecticut house, the early light reflected on the pine trees. From the forest comes the song of the wood thrushes that sounds like bells ringing.
"Ann's Lace" by Ann McCann 10 X 8" Oil
Queen Ann’s Lace dominates the wildflower fields here in Connecticut. Since she is a queen, I decided to to embellish her a bit.
"Hot Pink Peony" by Ann McCann 11 X 11" Watercolor
This painting screams summer in Texas, hot and bright. The “confetti” dots look like fireworks.
"Hydrangea Garden" (Plein Air Painting) by Ann McCann 9 X 12" Oil
The Dallas Arboretum has a hydrangea garden somewhat hidden away in the shade. I was there painting plein air with a group on a very hot day. There were large white and small pink flowers mixed together behind a stone wall.
"Heartfelt Poppy" by Ann McCann 12 X 9" Watercolor
I have been painting pink poppies and this is my favorite so far. I feel happy and calm when I look at it.
"Shady Spot" (plein air painting) by Ann McCann 12 X 12" Oil
When we were painting at the Dallas Arboretum two weeks ago we sought out the shady areas. It was very hot and humid from all the rain. Here was one under the trees planted with red/pink impatiens and white hydrangeas. Pretty inviting!

"Canna Celebration" (plein air) by Ann McCann 9 X 12" Oil
I am not usually a Canna lover, but they were gorgeous at the Arboretum last week. The colors of the flowers-pinks, reds, yellows- and even the leaves (eggplant!) were breathtaking. A group of us found a shady place and painted there all day.
"Plein Air Petunias" by Ann McCann 8 X 8" Oil
I was plein air painting with the Outdoor Painters Society at the Dallas Arboretum when I saw this planter of pink petunias. It was the end of the afternoon, and it was 95 degrees! I was so tired. I painted it very quickly and like the results.
"Gold Peony Bottle" by Ann McCann 8 X 16" Oil on Gold Paper
This pink peony stands in a lovely water bottle. The gold of the paper peeks out throughout the painting, especially the deckle edge. It can be framed just like a watercolor.
