These daylilies were everywhere in Cape Cod last July. They are the essence of summer, bright and cheerful. I pumped up the background color quite a bit so it jumps off the wall.
Flower Paintings
SOLD- "Pink & Red Poppies" by Ann McCann 9 X 12 Oil
I painted this with a client in mind, one who likes poppies. He bought it, and now the poppies have a good home. I love how the red poppies vibrate against the turquoise sky. They almost jump off the canvas.
Sun & Shadow Iris by Ann McCann 16 X 20 Oil
These are my neighbor's iris that I see across the street, glowing in the morning and evening. I was attracted to the play of the light and shadows on the plants. I did a small one first and then decided to do a large one for my October show at the Baylor Health Sciences Library. The reception is on October 6 from 6:30 to 8:30.
"Smiling Faces" 8 X 16 Oil (c) Ann McCann 2017
"Smiling Faces" by Ann McCann 8 X 16 Oil
I captured these pansies at the Dallas Arboretum. Pansies are so cheerful with their happy faces. Looking at these throughout the day would keep your spirits up.
"Vivian's Cape Cod Garden" 16 X 20" Oil (c) Ann McCann 2017
"Vivian's Cape Cod Garden" by Ann McCann 16 X 20 X 1.5" Oil
I took a plein air art class in Cape Cod a few summers ago and painted Vivian's (teacher) flowerbed with pastels (chalk). She had us do an exercise where we randomly made strokes on paper for 30 minutes. It was a really good loosening up exercise. The painting process then flowed more effortlessly. This second time, I painted the scene with oils for permanence but kept the brilliance of pastel colors with lots of bright, transparent oils. It is painted on the sides too so does not require framing.
"Orange Hibiscus Duo" 9 X 12 Oil (c) Ann McCann 2017
"Orange Hibiscus Duo" by Ann McCann 9 X 12 Oil
I passed by these lovely hibiscus flowers every day on my vacation in Cape Cod. While painting I noticed that I was creating the look of a pastel (chalk) with my oil paints. So, I made sure to keep that look.
Tropical Red, White & Blue by Ann McCann 12 X 16 Oil
(c)Tropical Red, White & Blue by Ann McCann 12 X 16 Oil, 2016
This was a 4th of July bouquet that I admired. I originally planned to paint the flag behind the flowers but decided that would be too busy. I love all the bright reds, oranges and blues. This is for a room that needs a little punch to it!
Not So White Rose by Ann McCann 6 X 6 Oil
I created this in a 30 day painting challenge where I painted a rose every day. This is one of my favorites, a white rose. White light is actually a rainbow of colors and so is my rose, glowing in the center.
Cone Flowers are Back! by Ann McCann 20 X 20 Oil
Every year my hot pink cone flowers take over more of my flower beds. They are spectacular when all are in bloom. I just let them have their way. Usually there are several butterflies on them. Notice the small one on the close up below.
"Quince in the Hood" by Ann McCann 9 X 12 Oil
Flaming red-orange quince bushes are the very earliest sign of spring in Dallas. There are not very many of them, probably too old fashioned. I am lucky to have a beautiful one on my street, in front of a lovely arts and crafts house.
"Water Irises" by Ann McCann 5 X 7 Oil
This is another plein air painting from my wild flower tour, April 2016, in South Texas.
I am finally finishing the paintings I started on my wild flower tour of South Texas in April. These are poppies I painted while standing in a field of them at the Wild Seed Farm in Fredericksburg, TX. What an amazing site, a field of red poppies blowing in the wind.
"Plein Air Poppies" by Ann McCann 5 X 7 Oil
Texas Sunshine by Ann McCann 9 X 12 Oil
I painted this on a cloudy day, and the sunflowers really added some sunshine.

30 Day Challenge- Day 6 Roses by Ann McCann 5 x 7 Oil
For Day 6, I decided to paint a truly red rose in a very loose way. I really like the looseness as well as the kick of the complementary colors of orange and blue.
